Pool History & Information

During the early 1930's, hot water was struck near Hooper, Colorado while drillers were exploring for oil.  The hot well water enters our large pool at 118 degrees . The  temperature is maintained between 98-100 degrees depending on the season.

The hot water well also heats the nearby greenhouses where organic tomatoes, cucumbers, and a variety of produce is grown. We sell the fresh produce at our pool concession stand prepared in various salads and food items or by the pound and box.

Before being reopened in August 1995, the "Hooper Pool", as we are affectionately called by locals, was last used for swimming in 1978.  Catfish were raised in the pool in the early 1980's and then the pool sat unused for about 10 years.  As the pool was deepened in the summer of 1995, three pool layers were unearthed.  Early visitors swam in a dirt-covered board pool and later renovations included two cement floors, ours being the third.

A large enclosure at one end of our facility assures comfort from the weather and covers the baby pool at the same time.  A 25 person therapy pool maintained at 105-107 degrees is also located under the enclosure.  We offer RV and camping spots with water and electric hook-ups located right near our facility.

The Sand Dunes Pool offers a full line of concessions-this is no ordinary concession stand!  Channel 7 News in Denver, Colorado voted us "The Best Concession Stand in Colorado"! We have a selection that would rival the best goodie store in the land!  We prepare tons of homemade specials, hamburgers, hot dogs, corn dogs, chicken nuggets, sandwiches, burritos, french fries, onion rings, nachos, pizza, fresh tomato/cucumber salads, and a huge selection of soda, juices, slushes, waters, candy, ice cream treats, soft serve frozen yogurt, and much more!

An assortment of pool toys are available for rent or purchase as well as towels and bathing suits.   Tables and grills, plus volleyball, basketball, tetherball, a horseshoe pit, and a large grassy area and creek for the kids offer lots of great family fun!  Nearby attractions include:  The Great Sand Dunes National Monument, San Luis Lakes State Park, the UFO Watchtower, (all providing camping facilities) the famous Colorado Alligator Farm, and The Thunder Valley Speedway.

We also have summer swimming lessons, private year-round swimming lessons, and special events! Group rates are also available.  Click HERE for our calendar.
